Is Global Warming A Myth?

Global warming has for long been an all-round topic of interest, especially in the midst of the renewed focus on climate change and environmental conservation. Various research studies and opinions linked to global warming supported the notion that the earth is on the verge of succumbing to adverse environmental challenges castigated by unsustainable use of gas and oil. As a result, the global warming lobby championed the efforts geared towards raising funds and sponsoring regulations focused on eliminating the use of oil and gas while ignoring the resulting negative impacts of such as the loss of jobs. Although the concept of global warming has been embraced and considered pertinent in explaining the prevailing climate changes, it is considered a myth as well. Scientists began to realize that temperatures were not rising steadily as earlier noted. However, with the increased debate on the topic comes the misinformation thanks to unprofessional journalism, social media and inaccurate view about data and public policy. This paper will focus on debunking why the concept of global warming is considered a myth. This will be achieved through providing counter arguments and providing evidence to confirm why these counterarguments are weak.

One of the common myths related to global warming is the suggestion that the global temperatures are rising at significant rates. However, this has overtime been proven non-factual. According to the results produced by University of East Anglia’s Research Unit and Hadley Centre of the UK, the temperature indices are not increasing steadily; surface temperature index shows the interchange of cooling and warming from 1878 to present (Bravo et al. 2008). In fact, the temperature measures show that the global average temperature has not for a long time now, with the mild warming of 0.6 to 0.80C over the 20th century being attributed to the natural temperature variations. While supporting the mythical perspective that increase in global temperatures is a product of global warming, Black & Weisel (2010) indicate that the stations recording these increases suffer from uneven distribution and placements. Most of them are normally located in urban industrial areas that show potentially higher readings relative to rural areas. In essence, this resulted in increased readings thereby propagating the perception regarding the existence of the concept of global warming. According to Black & Weisel (2010), this can only be corrected if the records related to surface temperatures are recorded accurately. The cause of the increase in temperatures that characterize the concept of global warming is normally linked to the greenhouse effect.

Another myth related to global warming is that carbon dioxide levels have increased over years, leading to the Greenhouse effect and earth warming. While it is factual that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased overtime, the trend has been the same throughout the geologic time, only that the causes are different. Yang, Song & He (2012) indicates that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased significantly by approximately 120 part per million (ppm) since the beginning of industrial revolution. Although Enger & Smith 2010) admit that the general levels of carbon dioxide levels have increased significantly due to human activities, they indicate that there exist no proof that carbon dioxide is the cause of global warming. Information from the measurements of ice cores over years show that the levels of carbon dioxide increase with the increase in temperature. Therefore, carbon dioxide can be viewed as the result of warming and not the cause of warming. In essence, the levels of carbon dioxide cannot increase without a corresponding increase in global temperatures. The geological research regarding the recent sediments has been able to confirm this causal relationship. Anastasi, Hudson & Simpson (1990) indicate that there is evidence regarding the expulsion of carbon dioxide from oceans resulting from the natural increase in temperature due to radiation. Thus, with the greenhouse gasses directly linked to the concept of global warming, the fact that their very existence is as a result of warming of the earth is an indication that global warming, together with the supposed causes, is a myth. One of the sources of green house houses is burning of the fossil fuels, mainly oil and gas.

The linkage of oil and gas industry to the causation of global warming through the production of green house gases has created the perception that global warming will only get worse if human beings do not stop using oil. However, if people stopped using oil and gas, the chances are that this will have insignificant impact in controlling the global temperatures from increasing (Hilyard, 2012). The burning of fossil fuels is not the only factor that regulates the temperature of the earth. According to Victor, Jaffe & Hayes (2006), regulation of global temperatures is a product of a myriad of factors. The most significant factor is the intensity of the sun. Other factors include the distance from sea, latitude, prevailing winds, ocean currents and height above the sea level. Thus, atmospheric temperatures are bound to continue rising if only one factor is eliminated. In essence, regulation of the atmospheric temperatures can only be attained if all these factors are kept constant, not just burning form fossil fuels. The linking of the carbon dioxide, produced through the burning of oil and gas, to the causation of the greenhouse effect can be viewed as an aspect of environmental pollution.

There is a suggestion that carbon dioxide, especially the one produced by burning of fuels, is a pollutant. However, this is untrue considering the fact that carbon dioxide is essential for life. Marini (2007) indicates that carbon dioxide is essential for plant life; thus, increased concentration will enhance the growth rates of plants. Marini (2007) indicates that high carbon dioxide concentration is likely to increase the production of plants. In fact, researchers such as United States (1984) are of the opinion that nitrogen, that has a percentage concentration of 80% in the atmosphere, should be the most significant pollutant as it does not support life. This is because, unlike carbon dioxide that supports plant life, nitrogen cannot support life by itself. Although the excess of the carbon dioxide compound can be harmful due to the creation of toxic substances such as acid rain, the production of carbon through the burning of oil and gas should be limited. In addition to the application of measures necessary for the reduction in the levels of greenhouse gasses, an efficient operation should also be achieved through the application of the spill response technologies and measures geared towards protecting wildlife from activities of oil and gas companies. After failing to cover up the evidence that global warming could be just another variation in temperatures, scientists could not provide contradictory evidence to cover this up, making them change their movement to climate change. Climate change is a broader term that is inclusive of the concept of global warming. Trying to integrate and describe it as climatic change shows that it is a myth.

The concept of global warming has currently attracted a lot of interest, especially due to its significance in oil and gas management. As a result, the discipline is characterized by various myths. One of the common myths for global warming relates to the suggestion that the global temperatures are rising at significant levels. The linkage of oil and gas industry to the causation of global warming through the production of green house gasses has created the perception that global warming will only get worse if human beings do not stop using oil. This is a lie considering the fact that carbon dioxide is essential for life. Another myth portends that if people stopped using oil and gas, chances are that this will have an insignificant impact in controlling the global temperatures from increasing. The last myth relates to the suggestion that carbon dioxide, especially the one produced by burning of fuels, is a pollutant. The three myths have been disputed by majorly because the global temperatures have increased and decreased naturally even without the changes in the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the fact that increase in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is not necessary harmful; unless in excess. Regardless of the cause, unsustainable increase in global temperature is a serious issue that has a negative impact on life. Therefore, there it is pertinent for the government and the local people to work together in curbing its negative effects on the environment. This enhances environmental protection and management.
